Hana-Awase (花合わせ)
A traditional Japanese card game for 3 players using Hanafuda (flower cards). Also known as "Hachi-Hachi" (八八) after its reference score of 88.
Cards
48 cards divided into 12 months (4 cards each). Each card has a point value:
| Type | Points | Count |
|---|
| Bright (光) | 20 | 5 |
| Animal/Seed (種) | 10 | 9 |
| Ribbon (短冊) | 5 | 10 |
| Plain (カス) | 1 | 24 |
Total: 264 points
Setup
Each player receives 7 cards, 6 cards are placed face-up on the field, and the remaining 21 cards form the draw pile.
Turn Structure
On your turn:
- Play a hand card — if it matches a field card by month, capture both. If no match, place it on the field.
- Draw from deck — same matching rule applies.
- If 2 field cards match, you choose which to capture. If 3 field cards match, capture all three.
Play continues until all hand cards are exhausted.
Hand Yaku
Checked at deal time. If found, that player wins the round immediately (+6 points):
- Teshi (手四): 4 cards of the same month in your starting hand
- Kuttsuki (くっつき): All hand cards are paired by month
Scoring (Zero-Sum)
After all cards are played:
Score = (Card Points − 88) + Yaku × 2 − Other Players' Yaku Total
Reference score = 264 ÷ 3 = 88 (the origin of the name "Hachi-Hachi")
All players' scores sum to zero each round.
