On Pro Plans and the Shop Feature

On Pro Plans and the Shop Feature

We have implemented the foundations for subscriptions and a marketplace. Neither is active yet. Here is what we built and how we are thinking about it going forward.

Pro Plan

We designed a two-tier plan where Free and Pro differ in AI strength and the range of available stamps. We are looking at other services to figure out pricing, but honestly, the current Pro plan — stronger CPU opponents and more stamps — does not feel like it justifies a paid tier yet.

Before charging anything, we want to make sure the value is there. We are considering additions such as more games, cosmetic features, further CPU improvements, and shop-related perks for subscribers. We plan to give existing beta users a free trial when the time comes.

Shop Feature

We also built a marketplace where sellers can list physical goods — game merchandise, card art, and similar items. Sellers register their products, Boardoor handles payment processing, and fulfillment is handled by the seller. We plan to set platform fees in line with comparable marketplace services, without putting too much burden on sellers.

For now, the shop is on hold. Sellers would need to register with an external payment service, and we still need to sort out refund and cancellation policies before we can open it up properly.

A Note on Operating Costs

We understand that moving toward paid features can feel unwelcome. That said, there are real costs involved — development tools, hosting (currently low but subject to usage-based billing as traffic grows), future app store distribution fees, and the time that goes into building and maintaining the platform. We keep expenses as low as we can, but a revenue model is necessary to keep things running. If and when we introduce paid plans, we want to do it only once we are confident the value is there.

Closing

We would genuinely appreciate feedback on any of the features in consideration. Updates will continue to appear here on the blog.
